A Caverna incandescente de Waitomo é um lugar fantástico, localizado na Nova Zelândia. Além da beleza geográfica do lugar, cheio de estalactites e estalagmites, um fator biológico é o que mais chama atenção: larvas incandescentes iluminam a caverna e enfeitam junto com fsios de seda. A larva do mosquito Arachnocampa luminosa enche o teto da caverna com fios de seda grudents de muco, e produzem uma luz bioluminescênte parecida com a dos vaga-lumes, que atrai insetos voadores. Esses insetos voam direto para o ponto luminoso e acabam presos no fio de seda, onde serão devorados pela larva. O efeito é simplesmente incrível: como ter um céu estrelado dentro da caverna!
The incandescent Glowworm Waitomo Cave is a fantastic place located in New Zealand. Besides the geographical beauty of the place, full of stalactites and stalagmites, a biological fact is what more draws attention: the lights of bioluminescent larvae adorn the cave with its silk. The larva of the fungus gnat Arachnocampa luminosa fills the cave ceiling with sticky silk full of mucus, and produce a light similar to fireflies, which attracts flying insects. These insects fly straight for the bright spot and end up stuck in silk, where it will be devoured by the larva. The effect is simply amazing: its like having a starry sky inside the cave!"
