I’m shocked with the amount of violent actions from the police against protesters that happened yesterday (June 20, 2013) in Rio de Janeiro! Reports yesterday from friends and their friends were scary: people trapped by the police in hospitals, universities, bars, residences and general buildings. Streets surrounded by the police, people stuck behind police barriers and unable to go home. Tear gas and rubber bullets being thrown by the police against people who were doing NO HARM, even when they were just standing, sitting or on their knees, in a position meaning “do not shoot”. Tear gas was being thrown INSIDE buildings, such as hospital, bars and at a famous concert house (“Circo Voador”). Helicopters were firing tear gas from the sky.
Today I saw many videos showing those repressive and inhumane acts coming from the police. I spent some time thinking if posting those videos wouldn't be an act of violence in itself, and if I really wanted to put my energies into doing this. I decided to do so, as I think what happened is unacceptable and should be exposed, even if shocking and violent scenes are to be shown - the mainstream media probably won’t air these videos.
